Chicago Fire official welcomes Mbokazi (right): Chicago Fire media
With the storm surrounding his transfer dying down, former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has given an update on his first week in training with Chicago Fire FC.
Speaking to the media of the Major League Soccer (MLS) team, the Bafana Bafana centre-back said he had arrived safely in America. He added that he was excited to meet his new team-mates.
“I wanted to pass a message of thanks, and let you know that I have arrived safely. I am happy with my teammates, as we are in pre-season,” he said.
The 20-year-old’s transfer to Chicago Fire, as announced last month, sparked debate. Some quarters that included Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, expressed reservations with such a move. The free-speaking Belgian suggested that the centre-back deserved to ply his trade in a top league preferably in Europe.
“I will tell you what I think. What is he going to do in Chicago?” Broos told the media. “It’s not even a top team in America. And if my info is right, don’t quote me, but they told me he will play in MLS 2, the second team of Chicago. I don’t know if it’s the truth; I will ask him when I see him. That is even worse.”
Despite such discouraging remarks, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, argued otherwise. He defended Mbokazi’s move to the MLS team.
The defender signed a long-term deal that extends through 2029, with the Fire holding a club option for the 2029/30 season. The deal is reportedly valued at $3 million.
Mbokazi will occupy an Under-22 Initiative slot and an international roster position at his new club in the USA.
The Bafana Bafana defender has been joined by former TS Galaxy winger Puso Dithejane. The youngster joined the American team for a reported transfer fee of €1.3 million.
