Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has backed South African coach Benni McCarthy to enjoy a successful stint as Kenya national team Harambee Stars coach.

The 47-year-olf McCarthy arrived to replace sacked Engin Firat two months ago and he has already overseen two matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In the first game, Kenya came twice from behind to snatch a dramatic 3-3 draw away to Gambia.

The second Group F match for McCarthy was against Gabon at Nyayo Stadium which Harambee Stars lost 2-1. Speaking in Nairobi, Cole, whose professional career lasted from 1988 to 2008, and is mostly remembered for his time with Man United, heaped praise on McCarthy saying he will do an exceptional job for Kenya.

“I have always had a good relationship with Benni. I believe he will do an exceptional job as the Harambee Stars coach,” said Cole. “Benni knows what he is talking about, and I have every confidence he will excel in his role.”

He continued: I’ve known him for years. He came to England, did very well as a player, and even worked as a coach at Manchester United a couple of seasons ago.

“I’ve always had a good relationship with him. He’s played European football, he’s won the European Cup, and I’d like to believe that, as a coach, he knows what he’s talking about. So yes, I think he’ll do very well.”

Kenya’s next assignment under McCarthy will be against Namibia at home on November 19.
