Marmoush, Semenyo score as Manchester City overpower Wolves

Ghana national team forward Antoine Semenyo and Egypt star Omar Marmoush each scored their first English Premier League goals for Manchester City in Saturday’s 2-0 win over bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Citizens came out of the tunnel with all guns blazing and rearing to go against Wolves at the Etihad in their week 23 fixture.

New signing Marc Guehi leapt high in a bid to head Bernardo Silva’s corner kick for their opener early in the game but Wolves keeper Jose Sa smothered the effort cleanly in the 5th minute.

Manchester City continued to draw forward with Rayan Cherki’s pass down the right to Matheus Nunes, whose cross was poked in by Marmoush in the sixth minute.

Marmoush’s opener gave City the needed impetus to thrust forward for more goals but Wolves managed to ward off most of the threatening incursions.

Guehi connected a long pass to Semenyo with the Ghanaian firing into the knees of Wolves keeper Jose Sa mid-way into the first half. Marmoush made a daring run down the left side moments later but his effort would only end up against the upright in the 10th minute.

With minutes to end the first half, Nico O’Reilly and Ryan Cherki teamed up with quick movements with Bernard Silva tapping into the action to connect Antoine Semenyo who smashed in the second.

The former Bournemouth striker lifted the home fans off their seats in the 77th minute with what looked like City’s third but his thundering left-footed strike scratched the crossbar, much to Wolves relief.

City controlled the game then on, compounding the woes of Wolves who sit bottom of the table with 8 points from 23 matches.

Semenyo went the full match as Manchester City closed the gap on Arsenal to four points pending the remaining week 23 fixtures on Sunday. He has an impressive three goals and an assist in his first four matches at his new club. Marmoush, meanwhile, scored his first goal for the club since late October when he tallied in a Carabao Cup victory over Swansea City.
