Morocco’s Olympique Safi (OCS) gave their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) a major boost on Sunday with a 2-1 Group A victory away from home over Ivorian club FC San Pédro.
Veteran midfielder Sofian El Moudane’s penalty kick close to halftime stood as the match winner. The former Wydad Casablanca player and OCS captain converted his spot kick after hosts San Pédro cancelled out Imad Khannouss’ opener.
A disastrous start for the Ivorian club left them behind after only 24 seconds at the Stade Laurent Pokou. A long ball down the right flank from the visitors led to Soulaimane El Bouchqali’s low cross sneaking through to the far post where Khannouss finished from less than six yards out.
The hosts were awakened by conceding early and fought their way back into the match. Abi Kassi quickly drove towards the OCS penalty area and passed to playmaker Issouf Dosso, who quickly relayed the ball to find the overlapping run of Karamoko Aboubakar. The attacker fired his finish into the top corner past OCS goalkeeper Hamza Hamiani to equalize.
But San Pédro lost their focus and were behind again four minutes later. Khannouss attempted to get on the end of a pass into the penalty area and was dragged down, setting up El Moudane to send goalkeeper Kombo Kouassi the wrong way on the resulting spot kick.
The Ivorian club pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half but luck was not on their side. Teenage midfielder Moussa Koné was set up by Marcel Alabi’s cross in the 68th minute but his effort was deflected wide. The visitors managed to hold on and secure three points in a crucial match that could determine second place in the group.

The two teams will meet again in one week’s time back in Morocco, where San Pédro must at least avoid defeat. Algeria’s USM Alger are the leaders in Group A with a perfect record of three wins from three matches after defeating Mali’s Djoliba on Saturday.
