Asante Kotoko produced a dominant performance, beating Holy Stars 3-0 during the Ghana Premier League week 20 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
Hubert Gyau pulled Asante Kotoko’s first shot at goal, but his sweeping strike was calmly collected by Holy Stars keeper Prince Asempah in the first minute of the game.
Kotoko continued their dominance with threatening attacks in the Holy Stars area but the visitors kept their composure with timely clearances.
Kotoko however heaved a sigh of relief when they were awarded a penalty after Boniface Blay mistakenly lunged into Saaka Dauda in his own area with Samba O’Neil stepping up to beat Prince Asempa from the spot in the half hour mark.
Kotoko keeper Mohamed Camara made a timely save three minutes away from the first half break when the Guinea import parried Prince Tweneboah’s effort inside the area.
Saaka Dauda came close to increasing the tally on the stroke of half time however he sliced the ball wide for Holy Stars goal kick.
The first twenty minutes of the second half was evenly matched with little scoring opportunities created by both sides.
Substitute, Albert Amoah meanwhile scored Kotoko’s second goal with a brilliant overhead kick in the 75th minute after Holy Stars defence failed to deal with Emmanuel Kotei’s cross. Amoah returned to the side on loan after struggling to command a regular shirt at Libyan outfit, Al Ahly Benghazi.
Kwame Opoku joined the fray moments later and found Kotoko’s third with a superlative overhead kick following an assist from Albert Amoah, completing the rout.
The Porcupine Warriors now go on 35 points same as rivals Hearts of Oak who pummeled Eleven Wonders 3-0 at the Legon Stadium on Saturday.
Two time champions Aduana FC equally have 35 points but both Aduana and Hearts of Oak sit behind Kotoko on goals difference.
