Algerian giants CR Belouizdad (CRB) are the new leaders in Group C following Sunday’s 2-0 CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) victory over South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.
Abdennour Belhocini struck inside five minutes to give the hosts a dream start and Farid El Melali’s late penalty kick confirmed three points for CRB, who now have a two-point lead at the top of the group.
After an unconvincing start to the group stage that saw them thrashed 1-4 against AS Otoho in the Republic of Congo, the 10-time Algerian club champions bounced back in style. A dominant performance put the visitors on the ropes but a resilient performance kept Stellies alive until the end.
But last season’s semifinalists could not launch any sort of assault on the CRB goal in the second half. The visitors failed to generate a single shot attempt and the Algerian club held on to their lead until late on when a penalty kick sealed their second victory of the group stage.
