ZESCO United have reserved their comment on reports suggesting they have dropped three key players from the final squad to face Kaizer Chiefs this weekend.
The Zambian side arrived in Durban on Wednesday ahead of a CAF Confederation Cup group-stage rematch against the Soweto giants at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday. Kick-off is 3:00pm Southern Africa Time.
Social media reports in Zambia claim that the ABSA Cup kings have left behind captain Kelvin Mubanga, Alex Ng’onga and Chanda Mukuka from the trip to South Africa.
In an interview with Pan-Africa Football, ZESCO United spokesperson Muntanga Sibalwa could neither confirm nor deny the talk regarding the trio, who featured in the home leg last weekend in Zambia.
“The team arrived in Durban safely. The update on the squad composition and any other relevant information will be available at an opportune time,” Sibalwa said.
United’s coach Mathews Ndlovu is expected to make a big call on his squad after suffering three straight defeats in the Confederation Cup group-stage.
United lost 1-0 to Chiefs in the initial leg played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday. Pule Mmondi scored the lone goal for AmaKhosi to leave Team Ya Ziko with a mountain to climb going into the return leg.
The nine-time MTN Super League champions anchor group D of the Confederation Cup without a point after losing 1-0 to leaders Zamalek and 3-2 to Al Masry, both opponents from Egypt.
The group stage concludes with a trip to Egypt to face Zamalek SC on February 15.
