After struggling to find his form during the 2025-26 season, Al Ahly forward Nejc Gradišar has returned to his native Hungary after completing a loan move away from the Cairo giants.

The Hungarian will finish the ongoing season at Újpest FC in the country’s top flight Nemzeti Bajnokság, a move that will open up a foreign player slot for Ahly to sign another striker. Club legend and Egyptian sports media personality Ahmed Shobeir first reported the news.

Shobeir, who spent his entire playing career with Al Ahly and won the 1986 Africa Cup of Nations, reports that the Egyptian Nile League champions will pay half of Gradišar’s salary amounting to $200,000 for the half-season. There are no indications that there is an option for Újpest to purchase their new acquisition on a permanent basis.

Gradišar got off to a decent start after joining the Red Devils midway through the 2024-25 season from another Hungarian club, Videoton FC Fehérvár. The 23-year-old accumulated 5 goals and 5 assists in 21 matches across all competitions for Ahly, including 3 appearances at the revamped FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.

However, his form gradually declined and considering his high price tag (€1.1 million), an exit became more and more inevitable.

The move paves the way for an intriguing new striker according to media reports in the region. Rumors indicate that Angolan-born forward Ieltsin Camões will be the new arrival. The 26-year-old, who spent his youth career at multiple clubs including Lisbon giants Sporting CP and Macclesfield Town in England, would join his new club from Norwegian side Tromsø IL if the transfer is completed as rumored.

Camões made his professional breakthrough in the Swedish fourth division Skellefteå FF and then continued his success at second tier (Superettan) club IK Brage. He then joined Tromsø for the 2025 campaign and produced 13 goals and 4 assists in 25 matches to lead his club to a third place finish.

Al Ahly are next in action on Sunday in the CAF Champions League when they face Tanzanian champions Young Africans in Zanzibar.
