Rogers Mato explains meaning behind iconic No.74 shirt at Hearts

Uganda Cranes forward Rogers Mato has opened up on the special significance behind the shirt number he will wear at Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian.

He was officially unveiled on Thursday after completing a loan move from North Macedonian outfit FK Vardar, marking a new chapter in his steadily rising career.

Upon arrival in Edinburgh, Mato was handed the number 74 jersey, a choice he says carries deep meaning.

Mato revealed that the number is a tribute to the club’s roots, dating back to its founding year of 1874, and one he embraced with pride rather than hesitation.

Mato began his career in Uganda with Proline FC

“That’s when the club started, 1874, so I’ll carry the legacy of the club on my back,” Mato said. “It’s a big responsibility, but I’m a man. We need responsibilities and we can’t hide from them.”

By joining Hearts, Mato becomes the fourth Ugandan to don the famous maroon shirt, following in the footsteps of club legends and compatriots David Obua, Toby Sibbick and Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru a lineage he is keen to honour with his performances.

Mato began his career in Uganda with Proline FC before earning a move to KCCA FC, where his talent attracted interest beyond the country’s borders.

He later featured for Sanliurfaspor in Turkey and Brera Strumica (formerly Akademija Pandev) in North Macedonia, experiences that have shaped him for the European stage.

Now at Hearts, Mato will be hoping his goals and the weight of No.74 help him leave a lasting mark in Scotland.
