Ligue 1 Roundup: Bamba Dieng continues resurgence, Kamory Doumbia and Ali Abdi score

Bamba Dieng missed out on Senegal’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations triumph due to injury and difficulties in his club career but he is continuing to thrive with Ligue 1 club Lorient while fellow African internationals Kamory Doumbia and Ali Abdi also scored over the weekend to kick off February.

Dieng appeared to be destined for an exit from Lorient after making very few appearances during the first half of the 2025-26 campaign. However, he gained confidence against minnows in the Coupe de France and took advantage of his opportunities to force himself back into coach Olivier Pantaloni’s XI.

The 25-year-old produced a poacher’s goal to open the scoring in Lorient’s 2-1 home victory over Nantes on Saturday. The forward arrived with a sliding finish from a Thรฉo Le Bris cross for his third league goal of the season.

He has now appeared in Lorient’s last six matches in the league and the cup, scoring eight goals. Five of those goals came against amateur and semi-professional clubs in the Coupe de France but since then, Dieng has started the last three league matches with two goals in those matches.

In a clash between Africans abroad on Sunday, it appeared that Brest would emerge victorious after Mali national team midfielder Kamory Doumbia doubled the visitors’ advantage to make it 2-0 by the half hour mark at OGC Nice.

But the hosts had other ideas. Nice surged back in the second half to claim a point in the battle between mid-table clubs.

Tunisia national team star left back Ali Abdi sparked the comeback by getting on the end of a free kick service from Jonathan Clauss to head in his first goal of the season.

On Saturday, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored as Olympique Marseille were held to a 2-2 draw by hosts Paris FC who leveled late on courtesy of Algeria international Ilan Kebbal’s penalty kick. Ivorian defender Guela Douรฉ was also among the goal scorers but despite his efforts, Strasbourg fell to a 1-2 defeat at home against Paris Saint-Germain.
