Krepin Diatta plots Nice downfall after French Cup elimination

Krepin Diatta’s Africa Cup of Nations glory was met with a bad day at the office following AS Monaco’s elimination from the French Cup round of 16.

Monaco suffered a 3-1 loss at Strasbourg on Thursday with Diatta joining the fray in the second half, ending a potential dream of winning a silverware this campaign.

Diatta, who starred in six games in the Teranga Lions journey to their second Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was left distraught after the heavy loss.

“It’s a shame because I thought we were going to confirm the positive signs we showed against Rennes, since everyone saw that the results could follow if we put in the right effort,” Diatta said.

Monaco are 10th on league table with 27 points

“We were on a three-match unbeaten run where we fought hard and gave everything we had. I wouldn’t say we didn’t fight, but we didn’t have the start we expected.

“I’ve been here for five years, this defeat hurts because the club represents something very important to me personally. It’s normal to be disappointed after being eliminated from the Coupe de France, but it’s up to us to turn things around because no one else will do it for us.”

The 26-year-old has however turned attention to their next fixture against rivals OG Nice in Sunday’s derby at the Allianz Riviera at 14:00 GMT.

“The derby is coming up, we need to show a different side of ourselves and go on a winning streak because we have the squad to do it. I believe in this team.

“Against Rennes, we played a great match, but today we fell back into our old habits, where we didn’t put in all the necessary effort from the start. Everyone knows that Ligue 1 is a tough league. If we want to win, we have to give everything we have every time.

“So we need to find consistency. This defeat will help us understand that”

Krepin Diatta has managed 11 matches in Ligue 1 with 14 games in all competitions this campaign, prompting uncertainties about his future at the club.

Monaco are 10th on the league table with 27 points from 20 league matches, 21 points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
