Anas Bach’s 85th minute strike was crucial for Moroccan club AS FAR, who moved into second place in Group B with a 1-0 CAF Champions League victory over Tanzania’s Young Africans (Yanga). In the other Group B match played simultaneously on Saturday, group leaders Al Ahly settled for a point in Algeria following a 0-0 draw at JS Kabylie (JSK).
The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) winner with Morocco kept his shot low to beat Young Africans and Mali national team goalkeeper Djigui Diarra. The victory came after a dominant effort from the hosts that nearly went to waste due to poor finishing.
Young Africans even nearly stole a victory at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where there were no supporters due to misbehavior earlier in the group stage. Prince Dube hit the post in the second half and then had a rebound attempt that was handled by AS FAR keeper Ahmed Reda Tagnouti.
But versatile defensive player Bach made his most important contribution on the other end late on. Tó Carneiro’s early cross from the left wing was not properly cleared by the defense and the ball fell to the former Fath Union Sport player, who made no mistake with his finish.
The result moves the Royal Army club into sole possesion of second place with a three-point gap on Saturday’s opponents in third place. Young Africans now must win at home next weekend when they host JSK in their Group B finale.
In Tizi Ouzou, Algeria, JSK were eliminated from contention to reach the quarterfinals after failing to defeat leaders Al Ahly. The hosts dominated the record African club champions but failed to find a breakthrough in a devastating result.

An intriguing final matchday awaits next weekend. Ahly, whose qualification to the quarterfinals is now secured, will look to hold on to top spot when they host AS FAR, who will be nervously watching the result of the Young Africans-JSK match if they fall to defeat.
