CAFCC: Zesco United aim to finish on a high against Zamalek – Ndlovu

Zesco United head coach Mathews Ndhlovu says the team is determined to finish the CAF Confederation Cup campaign on a positive note, despite failing to progress to the group stages.

Speaking during a pre-match press conference ahead of their Group D clash against Egyptian giants Zamalek at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday, Ndhlovu said the Zambian Super League outfit would aim to salvage some pride despite being already eliminated in the competition.

Ndhlovu said the team remains focused and committed ahead of the encounter.

‘The two games will mean a lot to us’

“We are taking the Zamalek game with the seriousness it deserves. We are out of the competition based on our position on the table, but we have challenged ourselves to finish on a high note,” Ndlovu told reporters ahead of the game.

“The remaining two games are important for us, especially in building confidence.

“We are out of competition looking at the table. I think we are giving ourselves a challenge to say we need to finish on the high despite losing all our matches.”

Ndlovu added: “We have two games and the race is still on. The two games will mean a lot to us and build our confidence for our domestic league also.”

Zesco United will fight for pride

Speaking on behalf of the players, Zesco United skipper Lindo Mkhonta said the team was hoping gift fans with a win despite having lost all their games.

“We are ready for the upcoming match tomorrow (Sunday). We are not going to have any chance to qualify to the next stage but we are going to fight for our pride,” explained Mkhonta.

“We can’t finish this tournament without getting any points. We are going to fight for points tomorrow (Sunday) and on the last day; we are going to fight for a win.”

Zamalek tops Group D with eight points with Al Masry and Kaizer Chiefs lying second and third respectively while Zesco United is at the bottom with naught points.

Out of four matches so far, the Timu ya Ziko have not registered a win. They have lost all their four matches. Zesco United have struggled in the ongoing 2025-26 group stage campaign and lost 1-0 to Zamalek in the reverse fixture played at Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.
