Ghana FA Cup: Medeama book quarters, Kotoko target Aduana scalp

The Ghana FA Cup has pitted some of the nation’s best clubs against each other in the Round of 16 with defending champions Asante Kotoko battling two-time Premier League champions Aduana FC on Sunday.

Fresh from their 1-3 league defeat at Kpando to Heart of Lions, Kotoko are faced with a must-win situation at the Baba Yara Stadium to placate their disappointed fans.

Head coach Karim Zito is anticipating a tough test against Aduana who are pursuing their third Ghana Premier League title.

“I am anticipating a good game better than what we did in the league, one of the worst performances in the league I will admit was against Heart of Lions and one nice thing about football is you always have the opportunity to make amendments,” Karim Zito told Kotoko TV.

“And we will use the Aduana match to make amendments, to please our fans and being the defending champions, we have to show that we are really the defending champions.

Nothing happens without a cause and during my address to them I told them that we don’t have any excuse against Aduana [and] we should go out and do the amendment or improve upon the match we played against Heart of Lions.”

Zito admits that there is mounting pressure to win at all costs to appease the fans who are still reeling in pain from their 3-1 league loss at Heart of Lions in Kpando.

“The kind of pressure I am talking about is wanting to win [and] that is the pressure and not anything else and I will be very happy if we are able to win this game.”

Kotoko, who defeated Division One side Golden Kick 2-1 in the final to win the tournament last season, eliminated rivals King Faisal after a 1-0 victory at the Baba Yara Stadium to secure the Round of 16 spot.

Current league leaders Medeama edged Samartex 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the proceedings ended goalless at the Tarkwa TnA Park on Saturday.

Nations FC produced a 2-1 win over All Blacks at the Dr. Kyei Sports Complex on Saturday, booking the quarter final spot alongside Medeama.
