Kenyan Premier League side Nairobi United suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in the CAF Confederation Cup campaign after going down 1-0 against Wydad AC at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
The promoted Kenyan side thought they had registered their first point but substitute Wissam Ben Yedder scored in the final minutes to win the game for the Moroccan giants.
United started the better side and should have taken the lead with only four minutes played. Shami Mwinyi was almost clear on goal following a brilliant pass from Gideon Otieno, but Wydad defence did enough to recover quickly and clear the danger.
Former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech wasted a good opportunity. Ziyech found space on the edge of the box after a superb work from midfielder Naïm Byar, but his trademark curling strike went off the target.
United then squandered another chance to take the lead in the 13th minute. Mwinyi, who was clean through, came up with a gapping goal, but instead of finishing off, he opted to deliver a pass, and unfortunately, there was no yellow shirt lurking in the danger area to tap it in.
The missed opportunity almost turned tragic for United as Wydad came close three minutes later, but goalkeeper Kevin Oduor kept them in the game with a massive save.
Oduor wasted no time with the ball, as he released Gideon Odour to initiate a counter attacking move. Gideon spotted the unmarked Benson Omalla with a defence splitting pass, but the former Gor Mahia striker and FKF Premier League top scorer for 2023-24 campaign failed to make the chance count.
The second period resumed with Wydad threatening first. Ziyech forced Oduor to make an incredible, full-stretching dive, to keep the scores level. United coach Salim Ali responded with the first change, Titus Ssematimba coming in to replace Kibwana.
Ziyech was withdrawn for Ben Yedder in the 65th minute, while Naim Byar came in for Abdelghafour Lamirat, and Walid Nassi replaced Moises Paniagua.
