CAF Confederation Cup: AS Otohô and CR Belouizdad advance after victories

CR Belouizdad (CRB) of Algeria and Republic of Congo’s AS Otohô are qualified to the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup after both teams emerged victorious on Sunday in the penultimate round of play from Group C.

Abdennour Belhocini’s impressive volley was enough for CRB to claim all three points in Zanzibar, where they defeated hosts Singida Black Stars 1-0.

The Algiers giants are on the verge of winning Group C following the result. Despite forward Mohamed Ben Hammouda’s red card in the second half and another red card late on that reduced them to nine men, CRB held on to their lead to eliminate the Tanzanian club with their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions.

CRB now only need to avoid defeat on the final matchday next weekend when they host Otohô, who made another strong statement at the Stade Alphonse Massambat-Débat with a 3-0 victory to eliminate South African club Stellenbosch FC.

Brazzaville was the site of another convincing result for the Congolese club, who previously stunned CRB with a 4-1 victory earlier in the group stage. A two-goal burst at the end of the first half crushed any hopes for the South African visitors, who can now only hope to avoid finishing last in the group when they host Singida on the final day.

It has been a humiliating continental campaign for coach Gavin Hunt and Stellies, who reached the semifinals of last season’s edition under current Simba SC coach Steve Barker.
