Ghana’s U-20 female team’s chances of qualifying for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland was pegged back by South Africa in Accra on Sunday.
The Black Princesses reached the third-round qualifiers after knocking out Tunisia 4-0 on aggregate in the second round of qualifiers, winning each leg 2-0 and were aiming to upset South Africa to make the reverse a formality.
Basetsana however came into the encounter to frustrate their hosts which they succeeded after crawling back twice to pull a 2-2 draw in the first leg.
Ghana now face an uphill task in the second leg as they must score and avoid conceding to stand a chance of reaching the third and final round of qualifiers where they will face the winner between Zambia and Uganda.
They have appeared in each World Cup since 2010 but have not gone beyond the group stage. The return encounter is set for February 14.
