CAFCL: Cardoso calls for support amid rising pressure at Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has issued an urgent appeal to the club’s supporters, calling for a “yellow wall” of support at Loftus Versfeld for this Saturday’s do-or-die CAF Champions League encounter against MC Alger.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Brazilians. Following a frustrating 1-1 draw against FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo in Lubumbashi this past Sunday, Sundowns find themselves in the precarious position of third place in Group C.

With only one matchday remaining, the path to the knockout stages has narrowed significantly for the Tshwane giants. To progress, Sundowns must secure all three points against an MC Alger side led by former Masandawana mentor Rulani Mokwena, while keeping a sharp eye on the result between Al-Hilal and Lupopo.

A Plea By Cardoso for Unity Amidst Rising Tension

The backdrop to this fixture is one of mounting pressure. Cardoso and Sporting Director Flemming Berg have recently faced the ire of disgruntled fans at Chloorkop. Following a string of inconsistent displays, some sections of the support base have even been heard chanting for the return of club legend Pitso Mosimane.

Addressing the media after the Lupopo draw, Cardoso emphasised the need for bravery and collective energy.

“We have to be brave enough to face the next match,” Cardoso stated. “We are playing in front of our public, and I hope they understand they have to support us, come in numbers, put in the energy, and help us.”

The Portuguese coach was firm in his tactical intent, dismissing any idea of playing for a stalemate. “We always play to win; we don’t play to draw. When you play to draw, you usually lose.”

Tactical Secrecy

Cardoso also hinted at a tactical shake-up for the visit of the Algerians, suggesting that unpredictability will be key to unlocking Mokwena’s side.

“We have to find ways to play this match so that the opponent doesn’t know how we play,” he added. “We must approach the match in the right way and, at the end, go through in the competition.”

Saturday’s clash at Loftus Versfeld is more than just a game; it is a test of character for a squad under fire and a coach fighting to prove he is the right man to lead the South African champions back to continental glory.
