Levis Opiyo prays for more ZESCO United clean-sheets

ZESCO United goalkeeper Levis Opiyo says he hopes to keep more clean-sheets for the Zambian side.

He said this after helping the ABSA Cup kings to beat Zamalek SC 1-0 in a CAF Confederation Cup Group D match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia, on Sunday.

Reflecting on the clean sheet he kept in his only second appearance for United, the 30-year-old said he hoped it was the beginning of good things to come.

“Of course, that is what a keeper is supposed to do. That is my job. I am hoping that if God blesses me more, I am going to get more clean sheets,” Opiyo said.

The former AFC Leopards custodian said the victory over the Egyptian Premier League giants was long overdue.

Opiyo reflects on life off field of play

“I thank God for the clean sheet. It is something that has been coming. We have been playing well, but we could concede after one mistake. Overall, we have been playing well,” he said.

Opiyo then gave an update on life off the field of play in Zambia, saying people in the Southern African country were helping him to find his feet.

“Zambia is similar to my country, Kenya. People are very welcoming and very humble, so I find it suitable,” he added.

The Kenyan made his debut for the power men the previous week when they lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs in Durban.

United signed the former Bandari FC shot-stopper to replace Toaster Nsabata who signed for South African club Sekhukhune United recently.

Levis Opiyo targets more clean sheets after ZESCO United victory over Zamalek SC

ZESCO United goalkeeper Levis Opiyo has expressed his desire to keep more clean sheets after playing a decisive role in his side’s 1-0 victory over Zamalek SC in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Kenyan international delivered an assured performance between the posts as ZESCO United stunned the Egyptian giants in their Group D encounter at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. The result marked a major boost for the Zambian side’s continental campaign and highlighted Opiyo’s growing influence within the squad.

Speaking after the match, Levis Opiyo reflected on keeping a clean sheet in only his second appearance for ZESCO United. The 30-year-old shot-stopper acknowledged that maintaining defensive solidity is central to his role and hopes the performance will be the start of a consistent run.

“Of course, that is what a keeper is supposed to do. That is my job. I am hoping that if God blesses me more, I am going to get more clean sheets,” Opiyo said.

The victory over Zamalek SC was particularly significant given the stature of the Egyptian club in African football. Zamalek, known for their strong continental pedigree, were unable to break down a disciplined ZESCO backline marshalled by Opiyo.

For the Kenyan goalkeeper, the clean sheet was a moment of redemption after a difficult debut the previous week.

From Kaizer Chiefs defeat to Zamalek triumph

Levis Opiyo made his debut for ZESCO United in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in Durban. Despite the loss, his overall performance was encouraging, and he retained the trust of the technical bench.

Against Zamalek SC, Opiyo demonstrated composure, sharp reflexes, and command of his penalty area. His interventions ensured that ZESCO United protected their slim advantage and secured all three points at home.

The result not only strengthened ZESCO’s position in Group D but also restored confidence within the squad after the earlier setback.
