“Jonas Adjetey must play above his best at Wolfsburg” – Akonnor

Former Ghana international and current coach of Gor Mahia, Charles Akonnor has urged defender Jonas Adjetey to play above himself in order to make an impact at German club VFL Wolfsburg.

Adjetey joined Wolfsburg in a four-and-a-half-year deal after his blistering performance with Swiss side FC Basel.

Akonnor, who once featured and captained Wolfsburg between 1998 and 2003, added his voice to Jonas Adjetey’s move to the German Bundesliga side.

Adjetey has seven caps for Ghana’s senior team

“It’s a great move. For Wolfsburg to sign him means he definitely has something good to offer,” Akonnor Graphic Sports.

“I’ll advise him not to joke with his time because time is very important for the Germans. When you are often late and not responsible, you end up having issues.

Akonnor who played and later coached Ghana’s senior team, urged the former Great Olympics centre-back to give above his best at Wolfsburg.

“If training starts at 10 a.m., he should be there by 9 a.m. and work on himself at the gym.

“When I went there, I was the first black player to captain the team. It was a difficult moment then, but now doors have been opened, and they understand the culture of the black man,” he said.

The 22-year-old defender made his Black Stars debut in an AFCON qualifying match against Sudan in Libya in October 2025 and has now has seven caps for the four time African champions.

The 6’2″ central defender left Ghana for Switzerland in 2022 and went on to make 73 appearances across all competitions for Basel, helping his former club to a league and cup double in 2024/25.
