Uganda Premier League: Vipers eye recovery, Bright Stars seek redemption in Kavumba derby

Matchday 22 of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League kicks off with two fixtures this evening. The early kickoff at Kavumba pits Soltilo Bright Stars against Police FC in a highly anticipated derby.

Bright Stars are desperate to recover from last week’s humbling 5-0 defeat to KCCA, which left them deep in the relegation zone. Despite the heavy loss, coach Ian Mutenda remains optimistic, drawing positives from his side’s improved second-half display.

Currently second from bottom with just 12 points, Bright Stars must turn their misfortunes around, while Police FC, sitting 12th with 23 points, will look to capitalize on their opponents’ struggles.

The first-round meeting between these sides ended in a 1-1 draw at the same venue. Later in the evening, table leaders Vipers SC welcome league debutants Lugazi FC to St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, seeking a swift response following their 1-0 defeat to SC Villa on Saturday.

That result cut their lead at the top to just two points, making this a must-win clash. There’s a boost for the Venoms as Milton Karisa could make his long-awaited return after missing the entire second round due to injury.

Midfielder Karim Watambala, who missed the Villa clash through suspension, is also available for selection. Meanwhile, Lugazi, will be eager to cause an upset, though they also saw their impressive run halted last week in a 1-0 loss to Maroons.

With second-placed NEC FC not playing until Friday when they visit UPDF, Vipers have a chance to stretch their lead to five points, a cushion they cannot afford to squander.
