The attacker walked into the game with confidence, having scored last Saturday in HSV’s 2-0 victory at FC Heidenheim.
Union Berlin, however, silenced the home crowd when Leopold Querfield scored from the penalty spot after VAR awarded a penalty in the 28th minute.
It was the former Dynamo Dresden forward who came up with the equalizer seven minutes later to bring the Volksparkstadion alive.
Two minutes into first half added time, Nicolas Capaldo latched on to an assist from Bakery Jatta to put the hosts 2-1 up, a result that separated the two sides into the break.
Königsdorffer, who has endured difficulties since his failed move to Ligue 1 side OGC Nice, doubled Die Rothosen lead to 3-1 in the 82nd minute before Andrej Illic pulled back a consolation to end the game at 3-2 in favour of the hosts.
The member of Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad has now scored 4 goals in 21 appearances after high level performances led his club to promotion last season with 14 goals scored.
Hamburg currently sit in 9th place on 25 points from 21 games, same as Union Berlin who have a played one more match.
