A 3-0 victory on Sunday in Zanzibar was not enough for Tanzanian champions Young Africans to advance to the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League. Despite the victory, Yanga came just shy of overtaking Morocco’s AS FAR, who advanced as Group B runners-up following a 0-0 draw at group winners Al Ahly.

Yanga did their part on Sunday with an excellent performance to defeat already eliminated JS Kabylie of Algeria. Two goals from Angolan striker Depú were followed by a goal from substitute Chadrack Boka with his first touch.
However, the East African giants needed help at the Cairo International Stadium, where hosts Ahly could not find a way past the defense of the visitors.
A defeat for the Moroccan giants would have resulted in their elimination, but wasteful finishing from Ahly forward Marwan Otaka combined with a strong performance from goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnouti allowed the Royal Army club to advance by the skin of their teeth.
For the second consecutive season, neither Yanga nor Dar es Salaam rivals Simba SC will take part in the quarterfinals after both were eliminated at the group stage.

Stade Malien are the lone representatives from West Africa after winning Group D.
