Hearts of Oak defied the odds to pip sworn rivals Asante Kotoko 1-0 during their week 22 Ghana Premier League match at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
A very physical first half saw Hearts shoot ahead with centre back Baba Adamu, who headed in Martin Karikari’s free kick with just 13 minutes played.

The Phobians suffered a first setback when striker Hamza Issah was substituted for George Paaku due to an ankle injury. They were dealt another big blow when Emmanuel Amankwah was sent off for a second yellow card in the 28th minute.
Hearts coach Mas Ud Dramani was then forced to pull out midfielder Mohammed Hussein for utility right-back Amanakwa Baafi to stabilize the back line and as well add some bite on the right flank. Despite the circumstances, they remained resolute in the face of numerical disadvantage to end the first half 1-0 in their favour.
Asante Kotoko pushed more men forward early in the second half in search of the equalizer, however the opposition backline kept their composure.
The Porcupines came close to pulling level but Albert Amoah skied Morifing Donzo’s pass off target in the 62nd minute. Right back Patrick Asiedu’s long ranger nearly found its way into the Hearts net but goalkeeper Benjamin Asare palmed the effort into corner kick with 18 minutes to play.
Raphael Amponsah was presented with a fine opportunity to increase Hearts of Oak’s tally but Kotoko keeper Mohamed Camara made a timely save to deny the Phobians moments later.
Top African referee Daniel Laryea whistled for the end of the game after four minutes of added time was exhausted, with the victors moving into second on 39 points, five behind leaders Medeama after 22 matches. Meanwhile, the Kumasi giants dropped to 5th on 35 points.
