Marumo Gallants break silence on Moroka Swallows legal battle

Marumo Gallants have officially addressed the swirling legal storm threatening their top-flight existence, confirming they have received court papers from Moroka Swallows regarding the controversial purchase of the club’s Betway Premiership status.

The statement comes in the wake of explosive reports over the weekend suggesting that the Dube Birds have moved to formally cancel the 2024 sale agreement. Swallows are reportedly seeking a High Court order to have their franchise status reverted to them, alleging that Gallants reneged on critical financial obligations.

The R40 Million Dispute Between Gallants and Swallows

At the heart of the litigation is a sale agreement signed in June 2024, valued at approximately R40 million. While a cash portion was reportedly settled up-front, the deal has hit a legal snag over secondary liabilities.

According to reports, Gallants allegedly failed to settle a SARS tax liability that has since ballooned to R13 million (including penalties). Furthermore, an additional R10 million meant to cover player and technical staff arrears was reportedly only partially paid through deductions from PSL grant payments.

There are also further allegations involving the sale of a National First Division (NFD) status—now trading as Leruma United—which was reportedly ceded as security for the debt, with Swallows’ legal team claiming they were kept in the dark regarding that transaction.

Marumo Gallants’ Official Stance

In a move to calm the waters in Mangaung, Marumo Gallants issued a firm response on Monday, opting for a measured, “sub-judice” approach.

“Marumo Gallants FC confirms that the Club received court documents relating to a matter by Moroka Swallows last Friday,” stated club spokesperson Sello Nduna.

“At this stage, as the matter is now before the court, the Club will not be making any further public comments nor will it be participating in media interviews regarding the issue. Marumo Gallants FC respects the legal process and will allow the matter to proceed through the appropriate judicial channels.”

Despite the looming threat of being stripped of their top-flight status, the club moved to reassure their fanbase that the internal engine is still running.

“The Club would like to assure its supporters, partners and stakeholders that operations continue as normal. Management, technical staff and players remain fully focused on preparations and ongoing commitments for the remainder of the season,” Nduna added.

While the lawyers prepare their briefs, Gallants are working on their survival in the league. Bahlabane Ba Ntwa currently find themselves in a scrap at the bottom end of the table, making on-field results just as critical as the courtroom battle.
