Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has characterised Wednesday’s heavyweight showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns as an “African Clasico,” emphasising that the magnitude of the title-defining fixture now resonates far beyond South African borders.
Speaking ahead of the top-of-the-table clash at Pirates training base – Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday, the Moroccan tactician revealed that the Buccaneers began their tactical preparations for the Brazilians a full fortnight ago.
And with Pirates currently holding a six-point lead at the summit of the Betway Premiership, Ouaddou believes the match has evolved into a continental spectacle that defines the careers of players and coaches alike.

While Pirates have had to navigate fixtures against Marumo Gallants and Nedbank Cup commitments recently, Ouaddou admitted the “big one” has been flickering in the background of their training sessions for some time.
“It was a while since we’ve been preparing for this game [against Sundowns]. Let’s say two weeks ago, we already started having the games in our mind, even though we were focused on the Nedbank Cup and the Gallants match as well,” Ouaddou told the media.
“We’ve prepared well, mentally and physically. My players are ready; there’s a lot of trust, confidence, and unity. We are impatient to play this game—these kinds of games are special for the players, coaches, and fans.”
The Moroccan tactician was quick to elevate the stature of the fixture, suggesting that the rivalry between the Sea Robbers and the Brazilians now transcends South African borders.
“You know that it’s one of the biggest Clasicos in Africa. We are talking about a game for the whole continent. In the career of a player, it’s important to play these games. Everyone remembers them at the end of their careers.”
The Buccaneers’ surge to the top has been built on a nearly impenetrable defensive foundation. Since losing their opening two games of the season, Pirates have embarked on a staggering run: 12 wins, two draws, 25 goals scored, and only five conceded.
Despite the mid-season departure of star defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi to MLS outfit Chicago Fire, the duo of Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema has provided the necessary steel.
Captain Sibisi noted that with both teams having played three times already this season, there are no secrets left.
“There hasn’t been much training; it’s just been recovery. We played a few days back, so for us, it’s just to be fresh for Wednesday. We know each other well, so hopefully, it’s going to be a spectacle,” Sibisi said.
