Senegal FA fights for detained AFCON fans in Morocco

The Federation of Senegalese Football (FSF) has outlined diplomatic steps it is pursuing to push for the release of their national team supporters detained in Morocco.

The fans were arrested over their alleged misconduct during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final on January 18 2026.

In a statement, FSF gave an update on the Teranga Lions’ supporters detained in the North African country for their role in the skirmishes the preceded the coronation of the Pape Thiaw’s men as the ultimate champions.

Senegal walked away with the AFCON crown after beating the Atlas Lions 1-0 in the ill-tempered final that produced a red card, missed penalty, near-boycott and controversial VAR decisions.

The 18 fans were arrested while attempting to invade the pitch after the final whistle. Some fans threw missiles onto the pitch.

The Senegalese nationals are set to answer charges of alleged hooliganism during the continental competition.

Steps Senegalese federation has taken?

Giving an update on the matter, FSF says it is ensuring that the natural course of justice is followed on the matter.

“The State of Senegal is fully mobilized for this purpose, at the highest level, in close collaboration with the competent Moroccan authorities, in respect of the fraternal and historical relations that unite our two countries,” reads part of the statement.

“Under the coordination of the Senegalese ambassador to Morocco, all necessary steps are being taken to scrupulously monitor the conditions of detention of our compatriots to guarantee respect for their fundamental rights and to ensure they receive appropriate legal assistance.

“The Federation remains in solidarity with its supporters, whose constant commitment to our national teams is recognized and appreciated.”

FSF has issued the statement days after lawyer for the detained fans, Patrick Kabou, told the international media that his clients had begun a hunger strike over the Moroccan authorities’ delays to present charges against them.

Senegalese fans and language barriers

Kabou told AFP news agency that police officers had questioned them in French and Arabic, whereas they “only speak Wolof”, their native language.

AFP reports that the group feels denied their “right to justice” and pledged to continue the strike “until Moroccan justice gives us the chance to be heard.”

A judge adjourned the first court hearing in late January, and the second hearing scheduled for Thursday was also postponed due to the ongoing lawyers’ strike in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Senegalese star Pape Matt Sarr has since urged the Moroccan authorities to release the fans. The trial is expected to resume next week.
