Werder Bremen blow: Victor Boniface ruled out for the season

Werder Bremen sporting director Peter Niemeyer has confirmed that forward Victor Boniface will not return to action for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

The striker, who joined the Green and Whites on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, sustained a serious knee injury during training last December. Following medical advice, the Nigerian international underwent surgery earlier this year. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at his parent club, Leverkusen, as he works toward regaining full fitness for the 2026/27 season.

Uncertain return date for Boniface

Speaking to DeichStube, Niemeyer admitted it remains difficult to put a specific timeline on the 25-year-old’s return, citing the unpredictable nature of long-term recovery.

“He’s completing his rehab in Leverkusen, and we’re happy about every bit of progress. But it’s still impossible to predict how quickly he’ll be fully fit again,” Niemeyer said.

“Due to the nature of the recovery process, we don’t expect Victor to play for Werder again this season.”

Despite the setback, the attacker has made encouraging strides recently, having progressed to light individual training on the grass. Prior to the injury, the Super Eagles striker had provided two assists in 11 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen.
