TFF 1. Lig: Sylla completes dramatic win for Erzurumspor; Thiam continues hot start at Çorum

Substitute forward Cheickne Sylla was the hero on Wednesday in Türkiye’s second tier TFF 1. Lig after scoring the late winning goal in a thrilling comeback 2-1 victory for leaders Erzurumspor.

Down 0-1 heading into second half stoppage time, the visitors somehow managed to reclaim their position at the top of the table. Eren Tozlu leveled the match from the penalty spot in the sixth minute of time added on but there was one more brutal surprise for hosts Keçiörengücü.

In the ninth minute of stoppage time, Martín Rodríguez collected a cross on the left wing and returned the ball into the penalty area. Sylla flicked his header perfectly into the corner to send the visitors into wild celebrations for their ninth consecutive league victory.

It was the 31-year-old Sylla’s seventh goal in all competitions this season as he continues to be an excellent substitute option late in the match. Four days earlier, he scored twice during a cameo against Adana Demirspor.

In another match from Wednesday, former Senegal national team striker Mame Thiam provided a goal and an assist in Çorum’s 3-2 comeback victory at Serikspor.

The 33-year-old converted a penalty kick in the first half but his team went into halftime down 1-2. However, two goals early in the second half from Burak Coban secured victory for the visitors, with his second strike coming from Thiam’s low cross.

Thiam, who represented Senegal at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and counts Fenerbahçe among the fifteen clubs he has represented, now has five goals in his first six matches for Çorum since joining from Süper Lig club Eyüpspor over the new year. The club now sit in 5th place as they push for promotion.
