The former AFC Leopards player, in the FKF Premier League, played for 90 minutes before he was replaced.
Speaking after the game, Jones admitted to being impressed by the performance of the Kenyan player especially managing to stop Southampton on their home soil.
“Magnificent, to make his debut away at Southampton. To come into it without playing for a little while – he was wonderful.” Jones told Charlton website.
He added: “The supporters were magnificent for a me all game. Our fans really warmed my heart today and I thank them for that.”
On the draw, he said: “It is a good point, these are a really, really good side. They are really fluid; they have some really good individual players. We know about the pedigree they have, so we had to be tactically good, we had to be really disciplined in our shape and we were that.”
The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal with the club after moving from Serbian SuperLiga side FK Vojvodina for an undisclosed fee.
Sichenje became the Addicks’ seventh signing of the window following the arrivals of Harry Clarke, Lyndon Dykes, Luke Chambers, Tiernan Brooks, Jayden Fevrier and Conor Coady.
Sichenje started his career with Green Commandos before moving to Kenyan Premier League side AFC Leopards in September 2019.
Following a brief spell in Greece with PAOK B, the centre-back returned to AFC Leopards before joining Swedish top-flight side AIK in 2022.
After spending the 2023-24 campaign on loan with Finnish outfit KuPS Kuopio, he joined FK Vojvodina on an initial six-month loan, with the move made permanent in September 2024 following an impressive start to life in Serbia.
Sichenje has represented Kenya eight times to date, having made his debut in a 1-0 win over South Sudan in March 2021.
Kenya international Collins Sichenje made a confident first appearance for Charlton Athletic F.C. in the EFL Championship, playing a full 90 minutes in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Southampton F.C. at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
The Harambee Stars defender, who joined Charlton on the final day of the January transfer window, wasted no time in making an impression. Handed an immediate start by head coach Nathan Jones, the 22-year-old rose to the occasion in one of the toughest away fixtures of the season.
Making a debut away at Southampton is no small task. The Saints boast a technically gifted attack and strong home support, yet Sichenje displayed calmness beyond his years.
Despite limited recent match action before his move, he handled the intensity well. His positioning, timing in tackles, and decision-making reflected maturity and strong tactical awareness.
Nathan Jones did not hide his admiration.
“Magnificent, to make his debut away at Southampton. To come into it without playing for a little while – he was wonderful,” Jones told the club’s official website.
Southampton are known for their fluid movement and quick transitions. For a defender making his first appearance, staying organized within the team’s defensive structure is crucial.
Sichenje remained disciplined throughout, helping Charlton maintain shape against waves of pressure.
Jones praised the team’s collective tactical approach:
“We had to be tactically good, we had to be really disciplined in our shape and we were that.”
The Kenyan’s performance suggests he quickly understood the coach’s defensive expectations.
One of Sichenje’s standout qualities has always been his physicality. Against Southampton’s forwards, he demonstrated strong aerial ability and confidence in duels.
Winning key headers and making timely clearances, he contributed significantly to Charlton earning a valuable away point.
His athletic profile gives Charlton an additional layer of defensive security as they push through the second half of the Championship campaign.
Joining a club mid-season can be challenging, especially in a competitive league like the EFL Championship. However, Sichenje appeared well-integrated, communicating effectively with teammates and maintaining defensive cohesion.
The defender signed a three-and-a-half-year contract after completing his move from FK Vojvodina for an undisclosed fee.
He became the Addicks’ seventh signing of the January window, joining the likes of Harry Clarke, Lyndon Dykes, Luke Chambers, Tiernan Brooks, Jayden Fevrier and Conor Coady.
His immediate impact strengthens Charlton’s defensive depth as the promotion battle intensifies.
Sichenje’s journey to English football has been marked by consistent growth.
He began his career at Green Commandos before earning a move to AFC Leopards in 2019. His performances attracted European interest, leading to spells with PAOK FC’s B team and later Swedish giants AIK Fotboll.
Loan stints, including time at Finnish side KuPS Kuopio, further sharpened his development before his move to Serbia and eventual permanent transfer to Vojvodina.
Each step prepared him for the demands of English football.
Sichenje has already represented Kenya eight times at senior level, making his debut in a 1-0 victory over South Sudan in March 2021.
Regular minutes in the EFL Championship could significantly enhance his development ahead of future Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and World Cup campaigns.
Exposure to high-intensity competition week in, week out, may elevate his defensive consistency and leadership potential for the Harambee Stars.
Charlton’s defensive reinforcement appears timely. Securing a point away to Southampton highlights the squad’s resilience, and Sichenje’s debut performance suggests he could become a regular starter.
With the Championship known for its physicality and relentless schedule, squad depth is vital. Sichenje’s versatility and composure may prove decisive in tight matches.
Nathan Jones’ early praise indicates confidence in the Kenyan defender’s ability to adapt quickly and contribute immediately.
