COSAFA Women’s Championship: ‘Malawi need points against Angola’ – Fazili

Having overcome Lesotho 8-1 on Saturday, Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili has outlined the final group-stage match objective.

The Scorchers take on Angola in a decisive match of the COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa in a winner-takes-all.

Fazili told COSAFA media that his charges need nothing short of maximum points in the final group meeting with Angola.

“I am happy with the result,” the coach said at Seshego Stadium. “My players did what we discussed in training, which is to collect maximum points because the more goals will help us do better in the next game.”

Why Fazili is happy with different scorers

Malawi offered a variety of goal scorers with Deborah Henry’s brace, Ireen Khumalo’s double, Vanessa Chikupira’s strike plus efforts from Olivia Mkandawire and Olivia Phikani.

Fazili highlighted the importance of his team not relying on one player to score goals. He said: “The good thing with the team is that we scored with different players. It shows that the players responded to training as we did a lot on finishing.”

The 2023 champions needed to make a response at Seshego Stadium after starting the bid in the group with a disappointing 2-0 loss to South Africa on Tuesday.

The statement underlines the tactical awareness within the camp. This was not just about beating Lesotho — it was about scoring as many goals as possible to strengthen their standing before the decisive showdown with Angola.
