Senegal defender Bouna Sarr played for the first time in almost three years when he replaced Lucas Michal in Metz’s 3-0 loss at Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in the French Ligue 1.
Coming on in the 66th minute, Bouna Sarr played his 169th Ligue 1 match this Saturday, his 111th for his boyhood club, but his first since November 11, 2023.

Bouna Sarr’s entry into the fray at the Parc des Princes marked the former Olympique Marseille player’s first game since November 11, 2023 in Bayern Munich’s 4-2 win over Heidenheim in the German Bundesliga.
The 34-year-old’s return to competitive action is encouraging and may signal the end of a long ordeal after battling an Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear.
The thirteen time capped Senegalese international returned to Lorraine last November to train and convince the club’s management to officially sign him with the deal finally going through with the Ligue 1 strugglers.
Metz are firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, four points adrift of the relegation playoff spot currently held by Auxerre, who host Rennes this Sunday (2:00 PM GMT).
Having been absent from the national team since March 2022, Sarr, who played a pivotal role in Senegal’s first Africa Cup of Nations title four years ago in Cameroon would undoubtedly love to rejoin the Lions of Teranga to play in his first World Cup, having missed the 2022 tournament due to injury.
The Bouna Sarr Ligue 1 comeback is significant not only because of the time away but also because of the circumstances surrounding his absence.
His last competitive match before this return came while playing for Bayern Munich in a 4-2 Bundesliga win over Heidenheim in November 2023. Shortly afterward, Sarr suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury — a setback that sidelined him for an extended period.
For a player in his mid-thirties, such an injury can often signal the twilight of a career. Instead, Sarr showed resilience, patience, and professionalism throughout his rehabilitation.
After leaving Bayern Munich, he returned to Lorraine in November last year to train with Metz in a bid to prove his fitness. His dedication paid off when the club officially completed his signing, giving him a pathway back into top-flight football.
Metz’s 3-0 defeat to PSG highlighted the club’s struggles this season. The Ligue 1 strugglers remain rooted to the bottom of the table, four points behind the relegation playoff spot currently held by AJ Auxerre.
Despite the result, Sarr’s introduction brought a sense of optimism. The Senegal international showed composure and experience during his 24-minute cameo, contributing defensively against one of Europe’s most potent attacking sides.
For Metz, battling relegation, the return of an experienced defender could prove vital in the coming weeks.
Beyond club football, the Bouna Sarr Ligue 1 comeback could have broader implications for the Senegal national team.
Sarr has not featured for Senegal since March 2022. He was part of the historic squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations title in Cameroon, helping the Lions of Teranga secure their first-ever continental crown.
However, injury ruled him out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, denying him the opportunity to represent his country on football’s biggest stage.
Now back in action, Sarr will undoubtedly be eyeing a return to international contention. At 34, time is not on his side, but experience and leadership could make him a valuable asset if he regains full match sharpness.
A potential call-up would not only symbolize personal redemption but also provide Senegal with additional defensive depth as they look ahead to future tournaments.
