Former Tanzania U-20 national team goalkeeper Daniel Mgore came up with several big saves for Dodoma, who frustrated the visiting title contenders at the Jamhuri Stadium in Tanzania’s capital city.

Simba appeared to be on the right path towards challenging rivals Young Africans after coach Steve Barker guided his team to three consecutive victories in all competitions. However, struggles with finishing continue to be a theme for a club that has only managed 18 goals in 10 league matches.

In comparison, Young Africans have accumulated 27 goals in the same amount of games in a league where lopsided victories are a common sight for the two Dar es Salaam giants.

But the city’s third most popular club, Azam FC, took advantage in the final match of the day to gain ground on the Reds. Florent Ibengé’s side had no issues marching to a 3-0 victory over Mtibwa Sugar.

Star player Feisal Salum stamped his influence on the match, opening the scoring inside two minutes before his excellent cross found Jean-Jacques Ngita to double the lead in the 19th minute.

A victory over Simba in early December has sparked Azam FC into a good run of form. Despite narrowly being eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup, the Ice Cream Makers are staying on the right path in domestic action.

They remain six points back of leaders Young Africans but are now within a point of Simba following Wednesday’s results.

There will be a couple more league matches on Thursday with Singida Black Stars among the teams in action. But all attention and anticipation will turn to the Kariakoo Derby between Young Africans and Simba on Sunday, where Yanga can seize full control of the title race.

Where are Simba and Azam on the league table?
