Egyptian giants Al Ahly have officially announced their intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a ruling issued by FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber in favor of former head coach José Riveiro.
The Spanish coach parted ways with Al Ahly last August after a brief spell that lasted approximately 96 days. His departure came shortly after a 2–0 defeat to Pyramids FC, a result that ultimately marked the end of his short tenure with the Cairo-based side.
Following his exit, the Spanish coach filed a complaint against the club for unpaid dues related to his contract termination. FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled in favor of Riveiro, ordering Al Ahly to pay a total compensation of $588,000. The amount includes the contractual penalty clause equivalent to three months’ salary.
In an official statement published on the club’s website, Dr. Abdullah Shehata, legal advisor to Al Ahly’s football sector, confirmed that the club will challenge the ruling before CAS. He explained that the appeal process will be finalized within a maximum of three weeks, pending receipt of the detailed grounds of the decision issued in favor of the Spanish manager.
Shehata emphasized that the FIFA ruling is not final and remains subject to further litigation. He stressed that the Egyptian club will proceed with the appeal in accordance with the established legal procedures, reaffirming the club’s commitment to defending its position through all available legal channels.
The case now shifts to CAS, where the final outcome will determine whether the initial compensation ruling stands or is amended in favor of the Egyptian side.
