The Morocco national team striker has struggled in 2026 since scoring three goals at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but his form returned at a timely moment as the Athens giants attempt to survive a firm title challenge from the likes of local rivals AEK as well as PAOK.
The favorites and visitors stayed well in control on Sunday but could not convert dominance of the ball into a halftime lead. However, the breakthrough came on the hour mark when halftime substitute Rodinei’s hard cross bounced to the edge of the six-yard box for El Kaabi to finish.
Ten minutes later, the lead was doubled through the powerful Moroccan who was left with an easier finish from Gelson Martins’ cross.

Since Morocco’s defeat in the final of the AFCON they hosted, El Kaabi had only managed one goal for his club since returning from national duty until Sunday. With AEK dropping points on Sunday in a 2-2 draw with Volos, the two main title contenders are level on 53 points through 23 rounds.
Three more rounds remain until the league splits into groups, with the top-4 finishers through 26 rounds qualifying for the championship group.
Despite his recent struggles, El Kaabi reclaimed sole possession of the title of league’s top scorer with 15 goals in 19 league matches. He has 18 goals in 30 matches from all competitions this season.
