Niger: Player data leak sparks outrage from players’ association

The Nigerien Footballers Association has denounced the act of disseminating personal information of players by some of the country’s football stakeholders. The West African nation has been rocked by players’ data forgery in recent times.

According to the Niger Press Agency, the association that represents players of the country stated its dissatisfaction over the recent chain of events in which personal data of players were circulating in the media.

The association president, Mahaman Laouali, expressed his concern. “The country Footballers Association wishes to express its deep concern and indignation at the resurgence of practices contrary to ethics and confidentiality rules, consisting of publicly disseminating personal information about players.”

in February, French journalist Romain Molina broke the news that a the country player had registered with two different ages. According to Molina, a the country U-21 national team player named Salifou Danja had two different registered ages with the national team and his club, AS Renaissance. Other players were said to be using two different ages as the Nigerien Football Federation failed to curb the incident.

Laouali vehemently opposed the leaking of such data and blamed unnamed football administrators for the fiasco: “It has been observed that some leaders, or rather so-called leaders, in contempt of their responsibilities and the dignity of footballers, allow themselves to make sensitive data such as civil status documents, administrative information, or even elements strictly relating to private life public.”

The association vowed to protect the personal data of all players. It has also threatened to take legal action so that players’ data can be kept confidential.

The controversy has sparked wider discussions about transparency and governance in football administration across Niger. Many observers believe that better systems are needed to verify player registration details and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. Football stakeholders in Niger have been urged to introduce stronger monitoring mechanisms to ensure that player records remain accurate and secure.

Age verification has long been a sensitive issue in African football, and the situation in Niger highlights the importance of proper documentation and regulation. Experts argue that implementing digital registration systems and stricter verification procedures could help prevent cases where players appear with different ages in official records.

Supporters and analysts have also expressed concern about the potential impact of such controversies on the reputation of Nigerien football. Issues involving player documentation can affect trust in domestic competitions and even raise questions during international tournaments where eligibility rules are strictly enforced.

For the football community in Niger, the priority now will be restoring credibility and protecting the rights of players. The Nigerien Footballers Association has insisted that athletes should not be exposed to unnecessary public scrutiny due to administrative failures. Instead, the focus should be on ensuring fair treatment and maintaining professional standards within the sport.

Moving forward, football authorities in Niger may need to work closely with clubs and player representatives to strengthen policies related to data protection and player registration. By improving transparency and accountability, the country’s football system can take steps toward rebuilding confidence among players, supporters and international stakeholders.

The recent developments have also renewed calls for stronger governance in football administration in Niger. Many stakeholders believe that protecting the integrity of the game requires strict adherence to rules regarding player registration and personal data management. By strengthening oversight and ensuring that sensitive information is handled responsibly, football authorities in Niger can help prevent similar controversies and safeguard the reputation of the sport in the country.
