Al Ahly have received disciplinary sanctions from the Confederation of African Football following incidents involving supporters during their match against AS FAR in the final round of the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
The match, played at Cairo International Stadium, ended in a goalless draw, allowing Al Ahly to finish top of Group B while AS FAR progressed as runners-up.
However, the encounter witnessed crowd disturbances, as Al Ahly supporters reportedly threw several water bottles onto the ground, forcing the referee to halt the match multiple times. The Moroccan club later submitted an official complaint regarding the incidents.
In an official statement, Al Ahly confirmed receiving a letter from CAF detailing the decisions of the Disciplinary Committee.
According to the statement, CAF ruled that Al Ahly will play their next two African home matches without supporters, with the second match suspension suspended. The club was also fined $50,000, in addition to another $10,000 fine for the use of laser pointers by fans during the match.
Al Ahly added that the club’s legal department will take the necessary steps regarding the sanctions.
As a result, the Egyptian giants are set to play the second leg of their upcoming quarter-final tie against Espérance Sportive de Tunis behind closed doors.
The first leg between the two teams will take place in Tunisia on March 15 at 9:00 PM GMT, while the return leg in Cairo is scheduled for March 21 at 7:00 PM GMT.
