Riyad Mahrez and Al Ahli Saudi moved back into top spot for now in the Saudi Pro League following Friday’s 3-1 victory over reigning champions and rivals Al Ittihad.

Some things never get old and the sight of the Algerian cutting inside from the right wing to fire in a shot is one of them. After an opportunity appeared to come and go for the hosts at the King Abdullah Sports City, Mahrez collected the ball and maneuvered his way in to fire in the match-winning goal.
Ittihad have struggled all season to match last season’s team that won the title and the loss of N’Golo Kanté has only added to the difficulty. The hosts took control in the first half and were rewarded with a halftime lead courtesy of yet another goal from Ivan Toney.
But former Liverpool player Fabinho converted a penalty kick early in the second half to move Ittihad level and create some concern for the home supporters.
Mahrez quickly put those doubts to rest with his seventh goal in all competitions this season. Saudi Arabia national team forward Firas Al Buraikan came off the bench to finish the job with a goal of his own late on.
Al Ahli are now one point ahead of title rivals Al Hilal and Al Nassr with less than ten matches remaining, with victories in their last six matches from all competitions. However, Al Nassr do hold the edge with a game in hand ahead of Saturday’s clash at home against Neom SC.
