The Pirates warning: Arthur Zwane wary of Casric Stars’ cup ambition

AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has issued a stern warning to his squad, insisting that Casric Stars are far more than just a lower-league “minnow” ahead of their Nedbank Cup quarter-final showdown at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Despite the home-ground advantage in Durban, Zwane is under no illusions about the task at hand. The Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit, Casric Stars arrives in the Kingdom with their tails up, having already sent shockwaves through the tournament by eliminating Orlando Pirates in the previous round.

The ‘Unknown’ Factor For Zwane About Casric Stars

For Zwane, the biggest challenge lies in the unpredictability of the visitors. While top-flight teams are often “open books” due to constant television coverage, Casric Stars have utilised a deep squad rotation that makes them difficult to scout.

“It’s difficult in the sense that you only get glimpses of them,” said Zwane. “They’ve got a big pool, and they’ve been rotating their squad. Whatever information we have might not be enough for us because this is one game we cannot take lightly.”

The former Kaizer Chiefs tactician noted that Casric’s fearless approach against Pirates proved they are not in the competition merely to make up the numbers.

Beyond the opposition, “10111” is also battling a gruelling schedule. Usuthu are currently in the midst of a demanding stretch—playing six games in just 14 days—a workload Zwane admits is a first for many of his players.

“Most of our boys have never been tested this way. It’s their very first time. We’re helping them psychologically and mentally to adjust to these kinds of demands at this level.”

With AmaZulu currently struggling for consistency in front of goal and their Betway Premiership form described by Zwane as “shabby,” the Nedbank Cup represents a crucial lifeline for the club’s silverware ambitions.

A Golden Opportunity

Despite the fatigue and the scoring drought, Zwane is adamant that the knockout format provides the perfect platform for a season turnaround.

“We’ve always said we want to compete; we want to win cups. Here is the opportunity for us, and we’re going to have to give it our all.”
