Sundowns ease past Orbit College to reclaim Betway Prem top spot

Mamelodi Sundowns moved three points clear at the summit of the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night, securing a 2-0 victory over struggling Orbit College FC at Olympia Park in Rustenburg.

Goals from Miguel Reisinho and a clinical penalty from Iqraam Rayners were enough to dampen the spirits of the Rustenburg faithful, as the defending champions flexed their tactical muscle ahead of the season’s final ten-game sprint.

Frustrating Opening for Sundowns

The first half was a tale of missed opportunities and a resolute Orbit College defence. Iqraam Rayners almost opened the scoring within the first minute, missing a header and a follow-up shot from close range.

Orbit College, led by the industrious Lesedi Kapinga—facing his former employers—showed flashes of defiance. Ayanda Lukhele forced a smart save from Bafana Bafana goalie Ronwen Williams in the 8th minute, but the hosts struggled to maintain possession against the high-pressing Sundowns midfield.

Despite dominant play from Monnapule Saleng and Arthur Sales, the visitors went into the break frustrated, with the scoreline deadlocked at 0-0.

Reisinho and Rayners Break the Deadlock

The second half began with a different intensity. Miguel Cardoso introduced Aubrey Modiba for Fawaaz Basadien at the restart, and the tactical shift paid immediate dividends.

In the 48th minute, the breakthrough finally arrived. Nuno Santos expertly flicked a header into the path of Miguel Reisinho, who made no mistake from point-blank range to poke the ball home and settle the visitors’ nerves.

Sundowns doubled their advantage in the 60th minute. The overlapping Khuliso Mudau was clumsily brought down in the box by Ramahlwe Mphahlele, leaving referee Abongile Tom with no choice but to point to the spot. Iqraam Rayners stepped up and coolly dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner, effectively ending the contest.

Orbit College attempted to find a way back into the game through a triple substitution in the 71st minute, bringing on Atisang Batsi and Mbulelo Wagaba, but the Sundowns backline—marshalled by Kegan Johannes and Keanu Cupido—remained impenetrable.

The closing stages were marred by a flurry of yellow cards as frustration grew for the hosts. Thulani Jingana and Realeboga Potsana both went into the book for heavy challenges on the evergreen Themba Zwane, who was introduced late to navigate the final minutes.

The Title Race Intensifies

The win sees Sundowns move to 47 points, three ahead of Orlando Pirates. However, the “Brazilians” will be watching closely on Wednesday night as the Buccaneers host Richards Bay at the Orlando Stadium.

Should Pirates win by a 2-0 margin, they will reclaim the top spot on goal difference, keeping the most closely contested title race in years on a knife-edge.

Orbit College, meanwhile, remains in deep trouble at 15th place, just five points away from the automatic relegation zone with only nine games remaining to save their top-flight status.
