World Cup: Cheikh N’Doye predicts tough tournament for Senegal

Former Senegal international, Cheikh Tidiane N’Doye has indicated that, the Teranga Lions will come under pressure at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 39-year-old midfielder, who made 30 appearances with two goals for Senegal, spoke about the ambitions of the national team ahead of the World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico.

N’Doye, who now plies his trade with Championnat National 2 side Cannes, also discussed the team’s preparation, the role of experienced players, and their competitiveness against teams like France and Norway.

Senegal will play former world champions France

“We will be under a lot of pressure at this World Cup. We just won the Africa Cup of Nations. Given the players we have, expectations will be high.

“For me, there’s no pressure. “France vs. Senegal will be a highly anticipated match. Once again, it won’t be easy, but we have what it takes and we’ll do everything we can to win,” N’Doye said on the RMC radio program After Foot.

The former Birmingham City and Red Star midfielder praised the work ethics of Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw.

“He’s one of the best coaches in Africa. The victory in the AFCON final demonstrated his effectiveness and his work with the team.”

Regarding the importance of the senior players, N’Doye emphasizes their crucial role: “Sadio Mané plays with heart and is a true leader. Kalidou Koulibaly deserves the captain’s armband and will do everything to help Senegal go as far as possible.

“[Idrissa]Gana is our linchpin in midfield, and Pape Gueye has confirmed his level. Ibrahim Mbaye, despite his young age, shows maturity and composure.

Senegal were crowned African champions

“For this World Cup, I’m not focusing on any one player. I’m counting on the Senegalese team, the collective. All the players will need to be fit and injury-free to get off to a good start in the competition.”

Senegal were crowned African champions after Pape Gueye’s late goal gave them a 1-0 win over hosts Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in January.

They are paired in group I against former world champions France, Norway with the third opponent set to be decided by the inter-confederation playoffs pathway.
