Zakaria El Ouahdi continued his excellent season with a first half goal on Thursday to make the difference in KRC Genk’s 1-0 first leg victory at home over German club Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.
The Moroccan right back showed the attacking force he is capable of being in the 24th minute. After showing some clever moves to escape pressure, El Ouahdi combined with Bryan Heynen to get behind the Freiburg defense and fire in a fine finish from a difficult angle.
El Ouahdi now has nine goals in all competitions this season to go along with three assists for Genk, who currently sit in 8th place in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League.
The first leg was a restrained and rather even affair. The hosts from Belgium made plenty of entries into the Freiburg half but struggled to create clear opportunities. After El Ouahdi’s opener, less risks were taken and the second half featured few chances at the Cegeka Arena.
But the Moroccan continues to be a player who can create moments of magic, especially in continental competition. His four goals in the Europa League leave the fullback/wingback tied for sixth on the top scorers’ list.
