Kaizer Chiefs report protest leader to police over violence threats

Kaizer Chiefs have taken decisive legal action following last weekend’s protest at Naturena, confirming that the alleged ringleader has been reported to the authorities for inciting violence and spreading “falsehoods” through the media.

The Soweto giants, currently battling a crisis on the pitch, are now facing a volatile situation off it. Addressing the media on Thursday morning at the Kaizer Chiefs Village, Media and Communications Officer Alpheus ‘Vina’ Maphosa issued a stern warning to those attempting to destabilise the club through “grandstanding” and intimidation.

Police Intervention and Viral Threats Amid Chiefs’ Poor Form

At the centre of the storm is Diakanya ‘Ronald’ Makgato, the man identified by the club as the primary organiser of Saturday’s march. While management initially accepted a memorandum of grievances, they claim Makgato’s subsequent media tour—spanning national television and radio—contradicted the peaceful nature of the formal document.

“He portrayed himself as someone coming to support the team and wanting to avoid violence,” Maphosa stated. “But on radio, he gave ultimatums with threats of violence at stadiums. He played to the gallery because he wanted to go viral.”

Maphosa confirmed that the club has handed over recordings of Makgato’s interviews to the police. The move is designed to ensure that the protest leader is held personally accountable should any “destructive behaviour” occur at upcoming fixtures.

Intoxication and Chaos at the Kaizer Chiefs Village

Detailing the events of the protest, the club revealed that the atmosphere was far from the disciplined demonstration portrayed on social media. Maphosa alleged that several individuals involved were visibly intoxicated, creating a hazardous environment for staff and representatives.

“Amongst those, we figured out that some were intoxicated, which posed a danger and created chaos,” Maphosa explained. “The threats of violence and ultimatums directed at the club are unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Kaizer Chiefs.”

A significant portion of the club’s statement focused on the protection of official supporters’ branches. Chiefs management expressed deep concern over verbal attacks aimed at “disciplined” members of recognised structures.

While the club maintains that they respect the voices of all fans—including those not affiliated with branches—they drew a hard line against the bullying of official members.

“Name-calling and threats of violence directed at branch members will not be tolerated. If we encounter such characters, we will be forced to take matters further,” warned Maphosa.

Focus Shifts to FNB Stadium

As the legal proceedings begin, the pressure remains firmly on the technical team led by Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef. With a four-match losing streak hanging over their heads, Amakhosi return to action this Sunday against Durban City FC in a Betway Premiership tie at FNB Stadium.

The club has called for “calm and best behaviour,” emphasising that the safety of women, children, and vulnerable groups at the stadium is a non-negotiable priority. With the police now monitoring the situation closely, the match against Durban City will serve as a massive test of both the team’s resolve and the fans’ restraint.
