Kaizer Chiefs snapped a disastrous four-match losing streak in the Betway Premiership, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Durban City FC at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A moment of brilliance from Makabi Lilepo in the 69th minute was the difference-maker, moving Amakhosi up to fifth on the log with 33 points after 19 games. The win provides much-needed breathing room for the coaching duo of Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who have been under intense scrutiny following recent fan protests at the Kaizer Chiefs Village.
After a cagey first half that saw both sides struggle to find a clinical edge, the match came alive in the second period. The introduction of young talent Mfundo Vilakazi in the 63rd minute proved to be a masterstroke. Just six minutes after coming on, Vilakazi combined with Lilepo, who unleashed a spectacular right-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the top right corner, leaving Darren Keet with no chance.
For a side that has struggled defensively of late, this was a massive afternoon for goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma. While Chiefs dominated large patches of play, Durban City remained a constant threat on the counter.
The closing stages were not for the faint-hearted. Durban City threw everything at the hosts in six minutes of added time. Inácio Miguel and Asanele Velebayi were forced to concede late corners under immense pressure, and Amakhosi survived a massive scare in the 94th minute when a goal-line clearance from Dillan Solomons denied the visitors a dramatic equaliser.
Despite the three points, the mountain remains steep for the Glamour Boys. They currently sit 14 points behind second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has been vocal about the technical team’s mandate: a top-two finish to secure CAF Champions League football.
While the title remains a distant dream, this victory stabilises a ship that was dangerously close to capsizing.
