CAF Champions League: Reghecamp laments Al-Hilal wastefulness against RS Berkane

Al-Hilal Omdurman coach Laurentiu Reghecamp has lamented his team’s wastefulness in their one-all CAF Champions League draw with RS Berkane in Morocco on Saturday, saying the result leaves the tie delicately poised.

In a post-match interview after the quarterfinal, first leg match, the 51-year-old said his Rwanda-based side should have killed off the tie right in the first-half at Stade Municipal de Berkane.

“It was a good match as both teams tried to play very well,” he said. “Even Berkane created a lot of chances. We had two or three big chances to make it 2-0 in the first half and close the game.

“Football is like that. You have a chance and if you don’t score; it happens like what happened today [Saturday]. We created big opportunity to score a goal, but we didn’t finish.”

Psychological edge for Hilal ahead of CAF Champions League return leg

Following the share of the spoils, Reghecamp believes Al-Hilal have a psychological advantage going into the return leg at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali next weekend.

“We will meet Berkane in Kigali and play the game. We think everything is open. If you finish a game 1-1, nothing has happened. Both teams have the quality. They can come back and change the result. We have the small advantage as we will be playing at home, so we will try everything to qualify for the next round.”

The Sudanese side scored first through Abdel Raouf in the 13th minute to silence the home crowd. Mounir Chouiar converted a late penalty for RS Berkane to level matters after Al Hilal defender Steven Ebuela had committed a foul and was sent off.

Going into the return leg in Rwanda, the Sudanese side need just any draw to seal their place in the quarterfinal while RS Berkane have no option but to win the tie.

The two teams will meet for the second leg next Sunday in Kigali, where Hilal continue to participate in the Rwanda Premier League as a guest club due to the ongoing war in Sudan.

Al-Hilal reached the quarterfinal stage, alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, after beating FC Saint Eloi Lupopo 1-0 on February 14 to finish top of Group C.
