Kaizer Chiefs get timely defensive boost

Buoyed by last Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Richards Bay FC in the top-flight league of South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs have received another squad-depth boost ahead of their next assignment.

AmaKhosi recorded a rare victory over the weekend to ease the pressure on under-fire coaching duo of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

Congolese forward Glody Lilepo struck the only goal of the Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

The result ended a four-game Betway Premiership winless run for South Africa’s most popular and among the biggest clubs in Africa.

Kaizer Chiefs duo makes timely return

The Glamour Boys now return to their second home venue of Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban for a dance with relegation-threatened Magesi FC on Saturday.

Ahead of the Betway Premiership match, Chiefs have welcomed influential defenders Sibongiseni Mthethwa and defender Aden McCarthy, who missed Sunday’s match due to suspensions.

Giving an update via their website, the Soweto giants have welcomed the duo’s return, saying “their availability adds depth to a squad already strengthened by recent recoveries from injury.”

Where Chiefs and Magesi stand on log table

Amakhosi sit in fifth position of the Betway Premiership log table with 33 points from 19 matches, miles away from Magesi who anchor the standings with 14 points from 20 games.

Chiefs are chasing a CAF inter club football qualification spot, while Magesi are fighting for mere survival.

New coach Allan Freese, who replaced John Maduka in February, yet to register a win in four games for the strugglers, whose return to the second tier Motsepe Foundation Championship now seems a harsh reality unless they turn the corner as soon as possible.
