Gavin Hunt embraces challenge of Golden Arrows rematch

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt has embraced the challenge of meeting Lamontville Golden Arrows FC on Wednesday for the second time in a month in South Africa’s top-flight league.

Stellies face Golden Arrows away in a Betway Premiership match at King Zwelithini Stadium, evoking memories of the two South African teams’ recent Nedbank Cup clash.

Abafana Bes’thende prevailed over the men for Hunt who dominated the proceedings only for the Durban-based opponents to sneak in a late winner.

Stellenbosch and Golden Arrows motivated by top-eight slot

With both teams now eyeing a top-eight slot on the Betway Premiership table, Hunt could not hide his frustrations with the outcome of their last assignment against TS Galaxy.

“We were hugely disappointed against Galaxy [last weekend] because I felt it was a real chance for us, but the way we started the game was really poor. We did come back into it, but it was disappointing,” Hunt told Stellenbosch FC website.

“Now, again, we take on Golden Arrows, who are right above us with the same points in the league, so it’s really crucial that we come away with something against them.”

Can Stellenbosch atone for failure against Golden Arrows?

The Premier Soccer League-title winning mentor said he hopes Stellenbosch FC will get the better of Golden Arrows in the rematch.

“This will be the second time that we play them in a month. We played really well in the first game, and I think we were unfortunate, but we missed a lot of opportunities,” he added.

“We didn’t take our chances, and they took the one they had, so we got beaten and knocked out of the Nedbank Cup, but this will be a different game.”

Abafana Bes’thende and Stellenbosch have 24 points apiece but are separated on goal aggregate in ninth and 10th positions respectively in the log table.

The Durban-based side is coming from a successful 2-1 victory over Marumo Gallants the previous weekend while Stellenbosch SC drew 1-1 with Galaxy on Friday.

The Betway Premiership encounter will kick off at 19h30 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL 202.
