Cardoso challenges Sundowns to ignore two-point lead over Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has sent a stern warning to his squad, insisting that their return to the top of the Betway Premiership table will mean nothing if they allow complacency to creep into their game.

The Brazilians moved two points clear of rivals Orlando Pirates on Tuesday night following a clinical 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. While the result provides a much-needed cushion heading into the business end of the season, Cardoso was quick to temper the celebrations.

The Danger of the ‘False Step’ Highlighted by Cardoso

With nine fixtures remaining and 50 points on the board, Sundowns find themselves in a familiar position of power. However, Cardoso believes the psychological battle is just beginning.

“It’s more comfortable than yesterday because Orlando Pirates were one point ahead,” Cardoso admitted. “However, it’s not really a comfortable place to be. If we feel that it’s comfortable, then we will take a false step.”

The Portuguese tactician emphasised that past performances offer no guarantees for the future. “If we think that what we have done will speak for us, that is wrong. What will help us is what we’re going to do in the next match. Any other attitude will lead to a false step, and that’s not what I want for this team.”

Continental Focus by Sundowns

The domestic victory serves as a perfect springboard for Masandawana’s continental ambitions. The team travels to Bamako this weekend for a crucial CAF Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash against Stade Malien.

Despite holding a commanding 3-0 aggregate lead, Cardoso is demanding total concentration.

“Winning today puts us in a much more comfortable place to prepare for the Champions League… but nothing is guaranteed,” he noted, referencing the hostile atmosphere and the presence of rival fans supporting their opponents on Tuesday. “We saw Pirates fans cheering for Gallants today—we know we have to fight for everything.”

The Title Race at a Glance

The victory marks Sundowns’ eighth consecutive league win, a run that has seen them overhaul a persistent Orlando Pirates side. The Buccaneers, who recently dropped points in a draw against Siwelele FC, now sit on 48 points from 21 games.

As the FIFA international break approaches, Cardoso is banking on the “positive energy” of being league leaders to sustain his players’ fitness and focus during a gruelling schedule.
