The Mngqithi and Komphela effect: Mathiane’s roadmap for success

Newly appointed Marumo Gallants interim mentor Matome Mathiane has opened up about his transition into the dugout, citing the mentorship of South African coaching royalty Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela as the primary blueprint for his new career path.

The 37-year-old was tasked with steering the struggling Betway Premiership side following the suspension of head coach Alexandre Lafitte. For Mathiane, the promotion from the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) ranks to the senior team represents the realisation of a long-held ambition nurtured under some of the finest minds in the local game.

The Leadership Blueprint – Mathiane

A veteran of the South African top flight, Mathiane hung up his boots after a career that saw him represent Baroka FC, Chippa United, and Golden Arrows. It was during his time as captain of Abafana Bes’thende that the seeds of coaching were first sown.

“I think it was always my dream,” Mathiane said following his side’s 3-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday. “Looking at the teams I played for, I was always a leader. I was always the captain. It was just in me. I told myself that when I retire, this is what I want to do.”

Mathiane’s coaching philosophy hasn’t been developed in a vacuum. During his playing days, he worked under the tutelage of Mngqithi and Komphela—two of the most respected tactical minds in African football. While he is eager to forge his own identity, he acknowledges the profound influence of his former mentors.

“I have worked with coaches like Manqoba and Steve Komphela. It is my dream to be like them as well,” he admitted. “I have been working with different coaches, and I have learnt a lot from them. I will add what I have to the boys.”

Despite the high-profile influences, the young coach is determined not to be a carbon copy of those who came before him.

“I don’t want to do things that other coaches did because they have their own history. I am still young in coaching, and I am willing to learn. I want people to see what I can offer, so I wouldn’t choose and say I want to be exactly like a specific coach.”

Tasked with fighting off a looming relegation threat, Mathiane’s immediate focus will be on translating his years of on-field leadership into tactical results. With Gallants currently sitting in 14th place, just four points off the bottom, the former defender will need every bit of that captain’s grit to ensure the club’s survival.
