Rayners and Chaine snubbed as Broos finalises Bafana squad for Panama tests

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has sent a clear message regarding form and fitness, naming a 23-man squad for this month’s international friendlies against Panama that features several high-profile omissions.

The most notable absentees from the final roster are Orlando Pirates shot-stopper Sipho Chaine and Mamelodi Sundowns’ prolific marksman Iqraam Rayners. Rayners’ exclusion has raised eyebrows across the local football fraternity, given his scintillating form for the Brazilians and his current standing as the second-highest scorer in the league, trailing only Golden Arrows’ Sede Junior Dion.

The Road to the 2026 World Cup For Broos and Bafanan

These fixtures serve as vital preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where South Africa faces a daunting Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, South Korea, and a European playoff winner.

The first encounter against the Central Americans is scheduled for Friday, 27 March, at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, followed by a second clash on Tuesday, 31 March, at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

Key Returns and New Faces in Bafana Set-up

In a significant boost for the national side, veteran playmaker Themba Zwane returns to the fold after an injury-induced absence during the recent AFCON tournament. He is joined by returning stars Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Thapelo Maseko, both of whom will look to cement their places in the World Cup plans.

In the goalkeeping department, Sekhukhune United’s Renaldo Leaner has been preferred over Chaine to provide cover for captain Ronwen Williams.
